Understanding the covenants is important to understanding what Jesus means when he said,
- “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you." (Luke 22:20)
What is God's Covenant?
A sacred partnership between God and His people
Genesis 1:26-28
Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
So God created mankind in his own image,
in the image of God he created them;
male and female he created them.
God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”
Genesis 6:5
The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.
Genesis 9:7-11
As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it. Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: “I now establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you and with every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature on earth. I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to destroy the earth.”

God's covenant with Adam that progresses to Noah. Each has a sign of the covenant, Eden for Adam and the rainbow for Noah.
